Buildings built before 1978 are much more likely to have lead-based paint. Lead is a naturally occurring element in the earth, but it is known to cause cardiovascular effects, increased blood pressure, decreased kidney function, behavior and learning problems in children, hearing problems, anemia, and more.
Federal law requires real estate agents to provide specified important information about lead-based paint before a prospective buyer is obligated under a contract to purchase.

Free Alexandria WORKSHOP: Improving the energy and water efficiency of your home

Learn Energy and Water Conservation Techniques with Energy Masters

Join volunteers from Energy Masters for a workshop on improving the energy and water efficiency of your home. Energy Masters volunteers will demonstrate simple techniques to help you save money and create a more sustainable community.  This free class will be held on Saturday, February 17 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Barrett Branch Library, 717 Queen Street in Alexandria. To register, contact Megan at mzimmerman@alexlibraryva.org or call 703.746.1714.

Energy Masters is an award-winning program sponsored by Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment (ACE)and the Virginia Cooperative Extension which trains volunteers in energy efficiency, water conservation, and community education and outreach in the City of Alexandria and Arlington County. To date, more than 180 volunteers have been trained and performed thousands of hours of community service to improve energy efficiency in the homes of more than 700 families living in affordable housing.

Researchers pinpointed the average return on investment of 20 popular home renovations by canvassing contractors nationwide on how much these upgrades cost to complete, then compared that with how much real estate agents estimated these features would boost a home's market price (in other words, their value).
