Kickoff of New Complete Streets Project to Make Seminary Road, Alexandria, Virginia, SAFER

Kickoff of New Complete Streets Project to Make Seminary Road Safer

On Saturday, May 12, beginning at noon, the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services' Complete Streets program will host a community walkaroundto help identify potential changes to make Seminary Road safer for all users. Participants will focus on items that the City can incorporate into planned repaving along the corridor.

Two separate groups of City staff will meet at noon at the intersections of Seminary Road and Quaker Lane, and Seminary Road and N. Jordan Street. The two groups will walk along the Seminary Road corridor, discussing existing conditions and collecting ideas for potential changes. After the walk, the groups will meet at the intersection of Seminary and St. Stephens Road, around 12:45 p.m., to further discuss observations.

This walkaround is the first of several planned information-gathering activities for the Seminary Road Complete Streets project, which will work with the community and stakeholders to determine roadway improvements for Seminary Road, from Quaker Lane to North Jordan Street, and at North Howard Street, where staff was awarded grant funding to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility.

Seminary Road is a key corridor in the City of Alexandria’s transportation network, and is scheduled for repaving in the near future. The Pedestrian and Bicycle Master PlanSafe Routes to School Plan Program recommendations, and the Vision Zero Action Plan all identify potential safety and mobility improvements for Seminary Road. The City's Complete Streets Policy notes that staff should use repaving as an opportunity to consider and incorporate changes to enhance the safety and convenience of all users.

Visit the Seminary Road Complete Streets project page for more information. Interested parties may also submit suggestions for changes to Seminary Road, and other streets scheduled for repaving, via the Complete Streets Repaving Feedback Form.

For more information, contact Darren Buck, Complete Streets Program Manager darren.buck@alexandriava.gov.

Alexandria (Virginia) City Council Votes Not to Increase 2018 Real Estate Tax or Personal Property Tax Rates

Alexandria City Council Votes Not to Increase 2018 Real Estate Tax or Personal Property Tax Rates

For Immediate Release: March 15, 2018

On March 14, the Alexandria City Council voted unanimously not to consider any increases from calendar years 2017 to 2018 in the tax rates for real estate, vehicles, or business tangible property. The real estate tax rate City Council eventually adopts could be the same or lower than the current rate of $1.13 per $100 of assessed value, but cannot be higher.

On February 20, the City Manager proposed a Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 Operating Budget and Capital Improvement Program reflecting no change in any tax rate.

A public hearing on the ordinance establishing the real estate tax rate will be held on Saturday, April 14, at 9:30 a.m., at City Hall (301 King St.), in City Council Chambers.

City Council will adopt a final real estate tax rate in conjunction with the adoption of the FY 2019 budget on May 3.

For more information about the FY 2019 budget process, visit www.alexandriava.gov/Budget.
